Physical therapist insurance, ARRGHH! yes, I know BUT… As a physical therapist you will find you will have to purchase the necessary evil of physical therapist malpractice insurance just everyone else.
It’s really not as bad as I may have just made it out to be. You do need it or you will be hanging out there for anyone to take a pot shot at by suing you.
It’s just that I wish the premiums weren’t so ridiculously high. That’s why you will need to shop around quite s a bit to find the best value, It’s not always the cheapest price that should say your favor, although that does help. It’s really all about ensuring you have the proper coverage for the best possible rate. This of course equals that value I was referring to earlier.
Physical therapist insurance is also fraught with a few other problems like coercion clauses that shift the responsibility to you in certain circumstances. These are things I really wish they would teach in physical therapist assistant school because it sure would make the transition to the real world much smoother.
Yes you sure can learn all the ins and outs out on your own through trial and error but I thought that’s what the Assistant physical therapist schools get paid for. If that was part of the core curriculum then there wouldn’t be any real confusion out here when grads finish up.
Yes, I’m sorry to say the need for PT malpractice insurance is at a greater than ever level. with the economy in a slump people have became even more “get a lawyer” happy than they were even just a few years ago.
My suggestion is don’t settle for the 1st quote you get by a long shot. Use all the means at your disposal to find new companies to investigate their websites ect… Because if you save even 10% of your premium you’re talking about real money when you add that up for the whole year. Then just think of what that would look like over a 20 year period. You could easily be talking about 2 brand new sports cars with the money you save.
When you do your physical therapist malpractice insurance comparisons be sure to sweat the small stuff. Yes, I know it’s a pain and they all look kind of cookie cutter the same after a while. But take the extra 15 minutes to look over the details to be sure you are getting the right coverage. If you ever do find yourself in court it’s those little details that will make or break your winning or losing.
On the bright side, it won’t take nearly as long to learn as your Physical Therapist Software
